Dual State Tools

S-Drill's Torque & Drag and Hydraulics modelling allows for dual state tools such as ball activated tools to be enabled by using the Activate Tools option. The Activate flag in combination with other parameters influences the behaviour of the tool allowing different states to be evaluated in the same calculation.

Diverters

When defining the Assembly, select the Diverter Sub component from the list and define the parameters. Use the Split Flow Calculator to calculate the required TFA for the desired flow rates.

The Diverter TFA is used to calculate the pressure loss between the string and annulus when the diverter is open.

A fully diverted option is also available indicating 100% of the flow will be diverted.

The Internal TFA is used to calculated the internal pressure loss and can be used to simulate different dropped ball configurations.

In the Simulation, define a circulating operating mode with the appropriate flow rate and check the Activate Tool option to enable the Diverter.

Under Reamers

Select the Under Reamer component from the list and populate the parameters

The Gauge is the cutting diameter to which the hole will be enlarged. The Drift OD is diameter used in pass through calculations.

In the Simulation, select the Activate Tool option for the drilling operating mode to enable the reamer. The open hole is enlarged above the reamer tool as far as the previous casing shoe.

Hanger/Packer

Setting of Packers or Hangers can be simulated by defining the setting parameters on the tool and using the Activate Tool option to simulate the conditions of the string when setting.

Exceeding packer setting values in normal operation will be indicated in the results and packer setting conditions can be displayed and compared against other calculated values.

Define the setting mechanism and parameters on the tool.

Packer Properties
Packer Properties

In the Simulation, the packer setting conditions can be applied to the string by selecting the appropriate operating mode and checking the Activate Tools option.

For compression set packers a Run in Hole operating mode must be selected. For Pressure Set, a Zero Friction operating mode must be selected.

Swivel / Clutch Tools

Swivel or clutch tools prevent rotation being transmitted below the tool when activated.

Select the Swivel Tool type in the Assembly. It has no additional properties.

In the Simulation choose the Rotate into Hole operating mode and check the Activate Tool option.

This can be compared with the Run in Hole condition.

When running the simulation, only the string above the tool is rotated.

Agitators

Agitator tools are used to reduce friction during drilling and function by vibrating the string to reduce the 'stiction' effect and the overall friction experienced by the sting.

In S-Drill the effect is applied to a zone of influence above and below the tool and is reduced at an exponential rate until almost zero at the end of the zone.

To enable the agitator effect, select a circulating mode and check the Activate Tools option. (The agitator is modelled in the same way as a motor and will only function if the flow rate is above the minimum)

Tractors

Tractor tools are used to run completions when rotation is not possible and friction would otherwise prevent running to TD

In the Assembly editor, select the Tractor tool and specify the Traction Force to be applied.

It the Simulation, add a Run in Hole or Pull out of Hole operating mode and check the Activate tool option

The traction force will be applied in the direction of motion of the string.
